ACLU - Le Terrace

On a trip home this weekend I read in the local paper in Nutley about this:

ACLU Press Release: 08-22-02 -- Racist Owners of Swim Club Barred "Black" and "Brown-Skinned" Visitors, ACLU of NJ Charges

During High School, I worked at this swim club as a lifeguard for 1.5 seasons. I ultimately left partly because of the way they treated people. I am really glad to see that someone is looking into this after all this time.

I read this article. These people who own this club should go to hell. And all those members of their "exclusive" club are racists as well, they are supporting discrimination. What is wrong with people?

Whoa, simmer down there. First and foremost, I think it is unfair to call all of the people who go there racist. I worked there with these people for a year and a half, and they were slick about how they discriminated people. Many of them probably had no idea.

By your reasoning, I should go to hell for working for them? Nah, I am sure that most people there were unaware of what was happening. I just found it interesting that they finally got caught.

ohhh...it sounded like it was out in the open that the swim club owners are racists. Like there was a sign outside. So the people who go there don't know is what you ae saying? You don't have to go to hell. Sometimes I get a little too excited.

From what I saw on CNN with Connie Chung, (a dubious source of news if there ever was one - Connie, not CNN), they would simply tell those with non-white guests that no guests were allowed that day.

I'm sure some people suspected something and never voiced concerns so they wouldn't jeopardize their own membership. Some noticed and may have quietly agreed with the policy, but only a very few chose to publicly claim the policy is wrong.

Hey, isn't the Joe DiVincenzo, the Democrat running for Essex County executive, from Nutley? Does anyone know if he is a member of the Le Terrace Club? Why hasn't he said anything about the club's racist policies?
