Chewy Not-Goodness
When a newbie tries sushi, all of the experienced players at the table inevitably say something like, "The fish doesn't taste fishy at all!" And they're right. It isn't the fish that's fishy, it's the seaweed. Seaweed tastes like everything that's wrong with the ocean pressed into chewy squares. Once a year, I order some vegetarian maki to see if the Universe has changed the taste of seaweed in the last 12 months.
I would like to report today that seaweed still tastes like crap. See you next year.

Obviously you just need to get the sushi with no seaweed -- the best stuff never comes in rolls anyways!
Oh the sweet potato maki wasn't too bad (there on the left) the seaweed was a small bit inside that wasn't too intrusive.
And a more knowledgeable sushi-eater informed me that the batch we had was not as fresh as it could have been and the seaweed was indeed a bit more fishy than she's had in the past.
Sounds like you're a prime candidate to eat Sashimi instead. All the sushi goodness but without the seaweed or carbs. Mmmmm.
